Vermeer in Royal Delft Blue
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is one of the Netherlands’ most famous painters from the 17th century. His name is inextricably linked to Delft, the city where he was born in 1632 and where he lived and worked his whole life. The N.V. Koninklijke Delftsche Aardewerkfabriek "De Porceleyne Fles Anno 1653”, known around the world as Royal Delft, is the leading producer of the world-famous Delftware. Royal Delft has always been inspired by the paintings of Johannes Vermeer and reproduces many versions of his famous works. After all, Royal Delft is a contemporary of Vermeer that is still in existence today.
Little is known about Vermeer himself, as he only created 34 works of art in his lifetime. He is mainly known for his intimate and serene depictions of bourgeois life. Thus he created paintings with titles like Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid and View of Delft. Perhaps his most famous painting is View of Houses in Delft, also known as The Little Street. The street painted by Vermeer is world-famous but at the same time unknown in Delft. It is not clear which street Vermeer painted or whether it even ever really existed.
Because of the unrivalled popularity of Vermeer and Delft Blue as characteristics of the city of Delft, this autumn one of the Royal Delft master painters will recreate Vermeer’s The Little Street in a unique enlarged version. The tableau, which will be made up of 221 tiles, will be around 2 m wide x 2.5 m high. The original, in contrast, only measures 54.3 cm x 44 cm.
From October 4, 2010 to June 2011 visitors will be able to personally view the progress of the masterpiece in the museum.
Painting In The Open Air In Van Gogh Museum
The research project Van Gogh’s studio practice, a collaboration with ICN and Shell, focuses not only on Van Gogh but also on the studio practice of his contemporaries and predecessors. That’s why this year’s annual presentation on this research features a painting by one of the artists who served as a source of inspiration to Van Gogh: Cliffs at Villerville-sur-Mer (1864-1872) by Charles-François Daubigny. This work was regarded as a milestone in the Impressionist tradition as it was held to have been painted in its entirety in the open air. Recent research, however, shows this to be a myth. This exhibition is on view from January 22, 2010 to January 23, 2011 in the van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. For more information, please visit; www.vangoghmuseum.nl

Made in Holland. Old Masters from an American private collection in Mauritshuis
Not all Old Master paintings are in museums; superb works also grace the walls of fine private collections all over the world. One of these is an American collection of Old Masters that is not open to the public. The Mauritshuis has secured the loan of the best works from this collection for an exhibition in the fall of 2010.
A selection of paintings has been made that are not only extraordinarily beautiful, but also in excellent condition. Works from this collection have occasionally been lent out to exhibitions in the United States and abroad. However, this is the first time that a broad selection from this outstanding collection will be presented in the Netherlands.
The exhibition features paintings by famous artists such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Hendrick Avercamp. Many other artists are represented as well, including Gerrit Dou with one of his rare still lifes, and Frans van Mieris the Elder with a genre scene. The exhibition is on display from November 4, 2010 to January 30, 2011 in Mauritshuis in The Hague.
Photographer between Memory and Future in the Jewish Historical Museum
In the 1940s and 50s, the photographer Boris Kowadlo (1911-1959) compiled a unique visual archive of Jewish life in the Netherlands and Israel. He took memorable photographs of Amsterdam's decrepit, abandoned Jewish quarter, while also documenting, as a photojournalist, the reconstruction of the Dutch Jewish community after 1945. Kowadlo's photo essays on the young state of Israel display not only his great talent and professionalism, but also his faith in a new future. The JHM presents the first broad retrospective of the work of this Dutch-Polish photographer.
This exhibition is on from November 29, 2010 until March 6, 2011 in the Jewish Historical Museum
