Some Dutch Titbits:
· The Dutch discovered New York which was called New Amsterdam before the British took over.
· Holland’s power dominated European culture and commerce in the 17th century Golden Age.
· Protestants had complete freedom with no central overlords or royalty. This is why the Pilgrim Fathers and other European Protestants fled to Holland and lived in Leiden before sailing to America.
· The notorious Marta Hari the supposed Dutch traitor, who was executed by the Germans in WW1, came from the northern province of Friesland.
· World renowned artists came from Holland such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer and so many others.
· World class innovators, who tamed the sea and reclaimed the land and built defence structures to keep it at bay.
· Renowned medieval and modern architecture.
· Cultivated the tulip and re-invented the usage of the windmill
· The port of Rotterdam is the second largest in the World after New York.

Large expat communities are mainly found in the Randstad cities of Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Haarlem or Leiden. This is where the main international companies and European organisations are located. This is not exclusive of course Eindhoven in Brabant towards the south of the country has been dubbed ’the city of light’ because of the electronics company Phillips.
Many international companies have their European or even world-wide headquarters in the Netherlands. The term embraces the Netherlands’ most powerful urban centres in the provinces of North and South Holland and Utrecht. Major exhibition centres are located in Amsterdam and Utrecht and The Hague is home to the Embassies, Europol, Peace Palace and the International Criminal Courts.
The beer is cold, the coffee is always ‘klaar’, (freshly brewed) and the apple pie is irresistible.
